Beta  Fortress

Modern TF2 has a spaghetti code problem. But what if the code became so messed up that it gained sentience? In Beta Fortress, you can experience just that. This game is an asset swap of another game I made, which was heavily inspired by Team Fortress 2. I figured it would reach a wider audience like this.

i must say, the ambience and tension built by this game is highly done! The sound design is great and the way it twists the classic tf2 sounds were great! The tutorial’s scare was also fun and good! I gotta actually finish the game because the tension I felt was a bit much for me!

(+1)

It was a really cool concept but I really couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do since you couldn't shoot scout and I think spy was stuck in a wall.

What engine did you use to make this?

unity

Nice game

Lmao (I ate the masked guy btw (and spy hitboxes are jank. Uninstalled after losing on third cap multiple times, got tired of running for 6+ minutes every second time I fail to get one of many spies in 2 shots))

you can kill the spy only if he's close enough to play the decloak sound

(+1)

Couldn't realize the white noise was actually a decloak sound, I was using the wood pipe alert sound instead.

Gave it another try, but it doesn't make sense how that sound plays only a few meters after the spy appears and starts running at me with his alert sound, and how it's only possible to shoot the spy after it plays, even if they're not invisible and it wouldn't matter in the game the assets are from.

That tip didn't help at first though as I've encountered another problem reaching third cap again (round 2). The spies started attacking every few seconds (which was obviously a bug, since they weren't even playing the alert sound), and not only that, they just kept appearing like a meter behind my back instead of the usual 10-15, barely giving me enough time to react and not even turn around (and the multiplying and overlapping fall and death sound makes it seem as if I tripped). That bug returned a few times later.

The next attempt I've encountered an inconsistency, since instead of the usual 4:15 minutes per cap I was getting 3:00 at max. The spy spawning got more real though and the ammo management got so much easier spending half the ammo and not randomly pressing reload it even stopped being a thing.

Got nothing to say on round 3 other than that the game feels like FNAF at this point, and the Green Mask guy who felt like an easter egg just spawned like 3 times.

Round 4 was more manageable but sometimes the spies attacked 4 times in a row, non-stop, at this point I wasn't sure if the heavy was supposed to start attacking pretty much all the time or if the Heavy Weapons Guy dialogue was supposed to be the same for rounds 3 and 4, especially since the round 2 ones dissapeared pretty shortly after the round start, or if the heavy head was supposed to be on round 2.

There's a lot of odd decisions i've noticed. XRay is introduced on round 1 (just to scare the player with some person in the top room, following him in invis and that ability suddenly disappearing) and was never mentioned again, suddenly replaced by the mostly 99% useless crouching (why did the game suddenly update to completely remove the mentioned unbalanced feature and to supposedly fix the broken one). It's odd that the time limit is only a thing on round 2 (and round 1 but it's barely a thing there) and is the only thing that made that round as "annoyingly difficult" as it was. There's also Pyro who's just standing there menacingly, random guy with a mask who runs into you, making damage sounds.

And the ending was just a single image. Is it only supposed to mean that the player we're playing as messed up by playing a very odd very unfinished online game before scanning it? Sniper description is a few notes by what seems to be a solo indie dev, pyro description is just a joke that has no revelance on the plot, but the messages appearing in-game are clearly made by a team of developers and are left there for what? The beginning is implying that there's plot, but there's also just no plot and you can only make one up yourself.

There's also a bunch of decisions and bugs making the game less scary, such as whistle sounds as if someone was sarcastically saying "ooh scaaryy", out of place ambient that sounds like it's from some sewer level in some old game. Pyro is just standing still, sometimes behind a wall as well, he seems rather friendly, The green guy feels entirely out of place. Top part of the ramp has an invisible wall, preventing any enemies from going up it, gun texture multiplying when shooting and reloading at the same time, and I have no idea what that collectible pixelated fnaf 2 minigame rose thing was.

Also I haven't changed my opinion, spy hitboxes (as well as heavy hitboxes) are jank since they are similar to backstab hitboxes and you just have to shoot in spy's general 180 direction, Heavy rarely just won't register being hit.

I keep dying because they dont disappear when i shoot them

and the timer sometimes instantly goes all the way to 0

(+1)

Yeah I'm sorry this is like my first game and it's super janky.

(+1)

Hope you upload the original version of the game one day

(+1)

same bro

(+1)

this is, for me, the hardest game i've ever played. It's very atmospheric and the gameplay makes me want to keep coming back to this game. Thank you!

(+3)

fucking peak game, but honestly my laptop cant run shit so it was a max 12 fps lmao

I capped the game at 30 cuz I found it to be scarier and more tense that way and it also fits the shitty phone screen recording but you had it so much worse lmao

gng i blame my shithole asus laptop lmao, BBBUUUTTTT it kinda did add to the old PC style yk i mean sure my pc's fans were begging to be killed but still

(+1)

This is awesome. I got sort of roadblocked at round 3 with all the enemies spawn camping me, Just like the real TF2!

Other than that, I hope to see more of this in the future. It's really unique.

(+2)

cool game! But I have found a bug. you can reload even when the rifle is full on ammo, and it will eat 4 bullets. Even when the rifle is being reloaded with let's say two bullets it will still take 4 bullets off of ammo. I'm saying this because i reloaded the rifle too fast, got no bullets left and the S̶͍̙̼̮͖̠̻͈̾̿͂̿̀P̵̛͇̺̫̫̫͈̒̔̍̒́̐̎͗̔͑̀͗̕̚͠ͅͅY̶̢̨̦̳͓̫͖͓̘̪̙͔͚̯̮͌͆͜       killed me

lmao that's  intentional but I always second guessed that decision. I wanted ammo management to be important but this probably not it.

(+1)

10/10 this is so good horror!

thanks <3

(+2)

I really like the game, especially the Filters you managed to put on it, but I feel like its far too repetitive. Requiring only 2 captures for each round would make it less boring.

(+1)

thanks for the feedback

(+1)

not bad but at last round it was frustrating
(+1)(-1)

I wish there was way to play the original version of the game.

Also please add the alien dudes that were planned for TF2 at some point in it's development as a new monster/monsters or something, that would be so cool.

idk if that'll fit but cool idea nonetheless

(1 edit) (+1)

10/10 atmosphere and creepiness, really solid game and overall I just really hope you keep adding more to this.

Edit, also game spoilers: I guess if I were to point at the thing I liked the least it'd be Heavy's behaviour.

The other two completely fit the atmosphere while still somewhat behaving like tf2 classes. Heavy... doesn't follow this rule at all and is mostly an annoyance, plus his entire model isn't on screen unlike the other two. Kind of disappointing for the face of the game.

Since you don't have any classes that attack your front, how about Heavy doing this? Slow when far away but at closer distances runs you down after a moment of "spinning up". Shooting could just stun him instead, long enough to break sightlines and set him back to his slow mode.

actually not a bad idea

this is fire

(+1)

is the framerate capped or smth? i can run tf2 at high settings with 60 fps but i have like 15-20 fps in this game

it's capped at 30

so bassicly i found out the game is unoptimized, can you fix that?

It's not unoptimized. it's supposed to be at 30.

(+1)

Do you think you'll add more accessible classes or at least more things in the future? One idea would be for the bot to work like any normal TF2 bot, only with terrible aim, so that after you kill it, the bot's navigation is corrupted and it stays in the base, and the spy chasing you has an entry, meaning before it appears to you for the first time, the system says that someone joined.

having more accesable classes is so much work incomparason to what it offers to the gameplay cuz you need to rebalance the game for each accessible class

(+1)

This is very well made I really enjoyed this game, I wasn't expecting a Team Fortress 2 horror game would be this scary.

(+2)

🔥

My only complaint is that there's no windowed mode so it kinda looks awful on my monitor lol (and not in a good way)

i would LOVE to see this game in its original state before the tf2 asset swap

Got a no commentary video instead?

The game wasn't very big. this is the only video of someone playing it

more of a bootleg  than a beta, but i still really like this! very cool! please make more games with this beta/bootleg style! ☻

thanks

(+2)

Wondeful! Something thats really not a ps1 horror game with long dialogs. Very good recreated visual of source in Unity!

(+1)

thankyou

very scary

Interesting game for sure. Especially for me since I play TF2 regularly. This kinda have the Serverblight feel to it and I like that. Keep it up.

I played this for a stream, and really enjoyed it, even though the difficulty ramps up a bit drastically for some of the enemies (Spy specifically likes to spawn a LOT on round 3 and 4),

I saw on a video of the game that it's supposed to just spawn me back when I get caught, but I get spawned, and can't see anything still as the black screen just stays permanently. I suspect this is most likely a bug tho!

Edit: I actually beat round 4 and finished the game, never really saw what pyro did, round 3 and 4 were both heavy(?), however I did manage to encounter a guy in a trenchcoat that just walked into me and hit me, and a rose that spawned around the map randomly. Not too sure what those were about, despite spending several minutes trying to clip out of bounds/hunt for secrets

I'm so sorry about the bug I fixed it already and you can respawn normaly. I also added some voicelines for the characters that they can randomly say. There is no ending at the moment but I want to do something better for it in the future and may add more secrets. Thanks a lot for playing!

(+1)

Absolutely! I quite enjoyed the style of the game, and it definitely gave me a spook here and there. The black screen respawn glitch wasn't too much of an issue, just had to restart the round.

I do look forward to future updates though, and I'll have to check the updated version with the voicelines since I like to dig around for stuff!

(1 edit)

is the game runnable on 32-bit systems? if not can you please make a 32-bit version, i would really like to play this on the school computer

I made you a 32-bit version

(+1)

thanks, ill definetly play this in school

can you make a browser version?

idk I never made a game like that before. I'll look into it when I get access to my computer

you could compile the game for "WebGL" and then use github pages to host it, from what I can tell.
